Badenoch giants face long trek if they reach Camanachd final
The Camanachd Association has announced that the venue for this year’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final will be Mossfield Stadium in Oban.
It means that if either Kignussie or Newtonmore - or both - make it to the final they will face a long trek for the big game on Saturday September 15.
Mossfield last hosted shinty’s premier event in 2009 where Fort William defeated Kyles Athletic with a dramatic last minute winner from Fort William’s James Clark.
Camanachd Association President Archie Robertson said: "We are delighted that Oban will once again host the final of the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup.
"Mossfield Stadium boasts some of the best facilities in the country and I am in no doubt that it will provide an excellent platform for shinty’s most prestigious competition."
Mr Donald MacVicar, Argyll and Bute Council’s Head of Community and Culture, said: "The Camanachd Cup Final is a major event in the Scottish sporting calendar, and we’re delighted that the association has decided to bring it back to Oban this year.
"It’s a tremendous vote of confidence in the town, which I am sure will live up to its reputation as a top quality venue.
"The cup final showcases the very best that shinty has to offer and is always a wonderful advert for the game and a hit with locals and visitors alike.
"I’m obviously hoping that we have an Argyll and Bute team to cheer on the day - as we did the last time the event came to Oban - but it promises to be a fantastic occasion regardless of the teams who contest it."
The Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final will be broadcast LIVE on BBC Scotland, Radio Scotland and Radio Nan Gaidheal as well as streamed online.
The decision comes after last week’s announcement that Scottish Hydro has renewed their shinty sponsorship for a further three years worth over £150,000.
