Coop crisis continues for Kingussie and Newtonmore casualties of cyber war

As a new week starts in Badenoch’s Coop stores so do more rows of empty shelves.

This afternoon’s checks demonstrate that headway is not being made by the company after the devastating cyber attack which so drastically affected the supply lines last week.

While a certain amount of bread and milk is available, along with alcohol products, for example, there is still a crucial lack of fruit, veg and processed foods.

The latest statement from Co-operative Group CEO Shirine Khoury-Haq confirmed “We are currently experiencing significant disruption following a cyber-attack on our Co-op.

“The criminals that are perpetrating these attacks are highly sophisticated and our colleagues are working tirelessly to do three things: (1) protect and defend our Co-op, (2) fully understand the extent of the impact caused by the attack and (3) provide much needed information to the authorities that may help them with their investigations.

“Actively managing the severity of the attack has meant shutting down some of our systems to protect the organisation.

“That said, our front-line colleagues are focused on minimising any disruption that might be experienced by our members and customers.”

A further statement from the media office has explained: “We are continuing to experience sustained malicious attempts by hackers to access our systems. As part of these attempts, hackers were able to access and extract data from one of our systems.

“This is a complex and ongoing situation, which we are investigating in conjunction with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the National Crime Agency (NCA).

“We have put in place enhanced security measures to protect our systems and minimise disruption for our colleagues, customers, members, and partners.

“The data we believe was extracted includes Co-op Group members’ personal data such as names, contact details (residential address, email address and phone number) and dates of birth.

“We do not believe the following types of identifiable personal data have been extracted: members’ passwords, bank or credit card details, transactions or information relating to any members’ or customers’ products or services with the Co-op Group.”
