Badenoch and Strathspey's new community councillors

The strath's new community councillors have been named.

There are now nine watchdogs after two of Badenoch and Strathspey's community councils folded following this week’s nominations deadline.

Local Highland councillor Jaci Douglas regretted: "I think people sometimes feel there is a mystery about what a community council does and are worried that they do not have the skills."

Both Grantown and Dulnain Bridge are now without a local watchdog group after years of public service from their members.

Councillor Douglas told the "Strathy": "We now have to bust that myth as we need people with all sorts of interests as everyone has something valuable to offer their community and can help shape it.

"It is about everyone working together to get the best we can for the local community."

In all, across the Highlands 20 community councils received more nominations than their maximum membership which means that a ballot will now take place.

No elections are required in the strath, since in all but two of the community council areas the numbers were sufficient without forcing a poll.

Across the region, some 109 community councils attracted more than half the maximum membership, allowing them to form from November 18.

A total of 25 will not be established as they failed to attract half the maximum membership.

The next opportunity for nominations to be made to those community councils will be in January 2016.

All candidates have until 4pm today (Thursday) to withdraw their nominations.

The maximum membership of each of the 154 Highland community council’s is determined by the population it serves and varies from seven to 13 members.
