It was a glittering night yesterday in Glasgow for Badenoch and Strathspey’s community bus company.

“We’re so proud to announce that we won a Highly Commended citation,” the company’s business development manager Colin Whitton of Badenoch and Strathspey Community ConnXions told the Strathy.

Mr Whitton was among the team from the strath’s vital connectors at the city’s majestic Marriott Hotel and explained: “We won the award in the category of Excellence in Social and Community Value.”

The organisation does more than just ferry about local pensioners in a bus. Their wide range of services includes a car scheme, shopping assistance, minibus hire, befriending, wheelchair and e-trikes facility.

Since 1999 it has become one of the most successful community transport schemes in the UK and was acknowledged as CTA provider of the year at the CTA Awards two years ago.

“With the assistance of volunteer drivers, we have created community transport, which is safe, accessible, cost-effective and flexible,” Mr Whitton said.

“The scheme is run by the community, for the community and meets the individual needs of people isolated by inadequate transport.”

The strath team had gone up against nine big-hitting larger organisations in the category, which was won overall by Lothian Buses and Police Scotland’s Operation Crackle Initiative.

“It was a fantastic night, hosted by Sanjeev Kohli.”
