A photograph of Badenoch and Strathspey MP and Chief Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander has been used by a phone scammer targeting a woman in Kentucky.

Francis Rains told a local radio station that she had answered the phone in September and been told that she had won $2.5 million and a Mercedes car by a man claiming to represent a lottery.

The same man called back later from a Jamaican number to ask for money. To prove his legitimacy, he said, the man then sent a picture he claimed was of him to Ms Rains. However, the image he sent was actually of Mr Alexander.

According to Sky News, Ms Rains said two other men claiming to be representatives of the FBI and a law firm also called her as part of the scam.

She told local station WKYT: "I sent some money. Being a dummy, but I sent it."

Ms Rains did not say how much money she had parted with

Mr Alexander (Lib Dem) told the ‘Strathy’: "I deplore these scams and my heart goes out to the lady who has lost her money. I wish the US enforcement agencies well in bringing the perpetrators to justice."
