Badenoch and Strathspey MP Drew Hendry has welcomed a ruling this morning that there will have to be a so-called Brexit Bill.

He said: "The Supreme Court’s ruling that Article 50 cannot be triggered without an Act of Parliament is a damning indictment of a UK Government that believed it could side-step Parliament over Brexit.

"People have a right to expect that parliamentarians representing them, have the opportunity to debate and decide upon the triggering of Article 50 and the terms of the UK’s negotiating position.

"Furthermore, today’s judgement has shown that UK Government sought to mislead Scotland about the power of the Sewel Convention and the importance of embedding it in statute. It lays bare the myth about the UK being a partnership of nations.

"Scotland and the Highlands did not vote to leave the EU and we did not vote to leave the single market. This is yet another example of this right wing Tory government ignoring the wishes of the Scottish people.

"Along with SNP colleagues, I will seek to work with others across the House of Commons to stop the potentially damaging effects of a rock hard Brexit. We will also table 50 substantial amendments to the Article 50 legislation to protect the interests of Scotland."

The ruling means that the Westminster Parliament must vote on whether the government can start the Brexit process.

The Supreme Court judges rejected the case put by ministers by a majority of eight to three.

Prime Minister Theresa May will now not be able to begin talks with the EU until MPs and peers give their backing.

Political experts believe this will still happen in time for the government's March 31 deadline.
