Aviemore community leader dies from heart-attack whilst in London
Aviemore has been stunned by the shock news of the sudden death of one of its favourite sons.
Reports came that Joe Kirby, a genuine heart of the community in so many capacities, had collapsed and died while in London at a rally with his union the RMT. It is understood he suffered a heart attack.
He was 39.
Tributes flowed once the confirmation of Joe’s passing had come after Tuesday's confirmation, none quicker than his old friend and former community council colleague Bill Lobban.
The Aviemore councillor and now convener of Highland Council told the Strathy: “Joe was a larger than life character.
“He did everything at full speed, with no half measures. Community councillor, charity fundraiser, political activist, he put his heart and soul into it all. He was a great and loyal friend and he leaves behind a loving family who will be devastated by his passing. We’ll all miss you big guy. RIP Joe.”
Aviemore Community Council chairman Peter Long said: “We were deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news.
“Joe’s enthusiasm, commitment and passion for this community will be very much missed. Our thoughts are with Catriona and family.
Mr Kirby led many campaigns, not least the Save our Swimming demand for continued public access to the Macdonald Resort’s pool.
He campaigned for better heating on behalf of fellow housing association residents and better facilities for youngsters, among so many other cases.
Mr Kirby also campaigned on rail issues in the strath drawing attention to proposed issues such as the reduction in station opening hours at Aviemore and Kingussie earlier this year.
In 2019 he completed a gruelling charity cycle marathon across Europe.
Mr Kirby is survived by his wife Catriona, three children and a grand-daughter.
