It's all downhill from here, folks!

Aviemore has been rated among the 10 most popular UK places to spend the festive season.

The village is included in new data from a leading travel website.

The list places Aviemore alongside both long-favoured locations like Edinburgh and the more unexpected spots, according to holidaylettings.co.uk.

Booking activity from the holiday website, which is owned by travel giant TripAdvisor, shows that travellers are not only celebrating the season in bustling locales like Edinburgh and London, but also in coastal destinations like Whitby, Newquay, Filey, Scarborough, and Padstow.

Saskia Welman, spokesperson for holidaylettings.co.uk, said that travellers are choosing a mix of big cities and smaller idylls for their festive break: “We’re not surprised to see Edinburgh take the top spot on this list, because it offers so many exciting attractions dedicated to celebrating and spreading the holiday spirit.

“But it’s interesting to see Aviemore appear alongside major hubs like London and destinations with crowd-pleasing Christmas festivals like York and Padstow.”

As demand for holiday lettings rises in and around both Aviemore and Edinburgh, local homeowners can benefit from the influx of visitors by renting out their homes or spare rooms, she said.

“We know that travellers appreciate the extra space and facilities that a holiday rental provides, especially over the Christmas season. Registering with us is an easy way to capitalise on holiday travel trends and make extra money for your own festive celebrations. Listing your home is completely free.”

For the record, the 10 most popular UK destinations for the 2016 Christmas holidays are Edinburgh, Tattershhall in Lincolnshire, London, Whitby, York, Newquay in Cornwall, Aviemore, Filey, Scarborough and Padstow in Cornwall.
