Aviemore police officers learn about mountain rescues in Cairngorms

Police officers based at Aviemore and Nairn stations have taken part in a familiarisation exercise with the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team ahead of winter.

The gathering this past week allowed the officers to tap into the knowledge and experience held by members of the rescue service.

A tour of the base at Inverdruie was given before everyone hiked up to the Cairn Gorm summit where the police officers experienced the terrain and landscape for themselves.

Sergeant Craig McGhee said: “This has given us a valuable insight into what challenges can be faced when someone has to be rescued.

"I would like to thank the team members for giving up their time and imparting their knowledge.

"We continue to work together to ensure that walkers, climbers and hikers can enjoy the beautiful, dramatic scenery Cairngorms offers.

He added: “My message to members of the public would be to enjoy the Cairngorms.

"However, before you set off, check the weather and ensure you have appropriate clothing as the weather can change very quickly.

"Don’t forget to charge your mobile phone and always notify someone of your intended route.”
