Aviemore Foodshare will try two days again
Following last week's Strathy report on slow takers for Aviemore's Foodshare service, numbers picked up last night (Friday).
"It's good and bad news," said co-ordinator Beth Hay.
"We were pleased to see13 people arriving yesterday morning, which is a lot more than last week, but there were only two in the evening so we're not sure if we're timing it right with just the Friday. We still need to know the best time for those who need what we have.
"But what is being taken is across the range, from fruit and veg to biscuits, coffee and tea and occasionally soup.
"Toilet rolls and toiletries are also clearly in demand, but we have to be open at the most appropriate times for the people."
Last week the Strathy reported that people and families were not using the service enough to justify its three-day week.
Initially the volunteers had turned out at the St Andrews Church Hall base on Grampian Road on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 11 in the morning to 1pm and then from 6-7pm, but latterly had been reduced to just running a Friday service – and last week only two people turned up.
Mrs Hay and her team were baffled at the lack of demand when it was clear that the need was there in the community.
Now things have picked up, she said a tweak would be made in the hours.
"I think we'll try Wednesday evening and Friday morning, to see how things go," she said.
The idea is that none of the strath's food goes to landfill.
"We have excellent school uniforms for youngsters – but no one has come to pick them up.
“We have boxes and crates full of useful things but they are just sitting here."
The idea is that those wanting to use the Foodshare service just turn up on the day. There is no need for form-filling and referrals. but more details can be found on 01479 810004 or by emailing info@ct4u.co.uk
