A Fife couple are Aviemore-bound for a luxury Highland holiday after becoming the 100,000 member of ScotRail’s new Club 50 discount scheme.

The scheme offers 20% discounts on all off-peak and advance fares to people aged over 50, proving “extremely popular” since launching last month.

ScotRail celebrated hitting the six-figure milestone by presenting William Thomson (55) from Thornton, with a two-night stay for two at Macdonald Aviemore Resort, which recently underwent a £5million refurbishment.

Mr Thomson also received two first class rail tickets to and from the Highland resort over the road from ScotRail’s Aviemore station.

Mr Thomson said he was very much looking forward to visiting the luxurious hotel and leisure complex with his wife Christine. They plan to make the most of the resort amenities and enjoy the spectacular setting within the Cairngorms National Park.

He said: “It is a wonderful, unexpected surprise to hear that I’m the 100,000 member of Club 50.

“I’m really looking forward to our trip to Aviemore and we’re already planning further fun journeys around Scotland using the great Club 50 scheme.”

Nesta Gilliland, ScotRail’s head of marketing, said: “Club 50 has really caught the imagination of our 50+ customers, who can now enjoy year-round discounts - even on short journeys - as well as other great benefits.

“We’re pleased to be able to mark this 100,000-member milestone, and wish Mr Thomson all the best for his journey and stay in Aviemore.”

Club 50 costs £15 a year, with members gaining access to year-round savings in return for travelling at quieter times.
