Broad areas of the strath were without power for short spells on Wednesday night but by all accounts the service had been fully restored locally by midnight.

Supplies were being restored after an outage which hit the entire north of Scotland with the strath getting off lightly compared to many other parts of the country.

First Minister Alex Salmond, chaired a Scottish Government Resilience Committee (SGoRR) meeting, and was updated on the network operator’s progress in restoring power to affected homes.

A Scottish Governmetn spokesman said: “A significant number of homes have now had power restored and the First Minister welcomed assurances that power is being restored to the remaining areas."
