Carmichael and Swinney to feature in Highland independence debate

A vote on Scottish independence is getting ever nearer

With the independence referendum fast approaching, voters in the Highlands are being given the opportunity to air their views at an upcoming debate.

Business organisations, including the Institute of Directors (IoD) Highlands and Islands branch, are hosting The Referendum Debate at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness on August 20.

Paul Houlden, IoD Highlands and Islands chairman, said: "The Referendum Debate is a much-needed opportunity to clarify issues about how our vote will affect our businesses now and in the future.

"Many of us feel there are still too many unanswered questions.

"At the debate we will have the chance to put some of those questions to Secretary of State for Scotland, Alistair Carmichael and John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth in the Scottish Government.

"The big question, of course, is whether we can deliver better growth in our economy by remaining part of the UK, or by choosing independence.

"Too often it seems that the big questions go unanswered while we are subjected to another round of claim and counter-claim from both ‘yes’ and ‘no’ camps.

"I am looking forward to this debate so we can hopefully get some answers with substance.

"We need that, because the decision we make in the polling booths on September 18 will have a profound effect on the future for our businesses, our families and future generations."

Jointly organised by the Federation of Small Business, the Institute of Directors, Inverness Chamber of Commerce and the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, The Referendum Debate will take place on Wednesday, August 20, from 11.45 am to 2pm.
