Grantonian grabs orienteering honour
A Grantown pupil has taken top honours at a major orienteering event in Yorkshire.
Grantown Grammar School S2's Alice Kemsley (13), won the British Long Distance Orienteering Championships held in Yorkshire on Sunday (May 5).
Alice, who trains with Badenoch and Strathspey Orienteering Club, won the event for her W14 age group.
She completed the 4km (105m) race in 32:14 which included running and map reading and passing through a series of controls (checkpoints) as quickly as possible.
The performance showcased the Strathspey athlete's ambitious approach with her speed, accuracy and concentration leading her to victory.
Councillor John Finlayson, chair of Highland Council’s care, learning and housing committee, said: “Alice is clearly a determined athlete whose commitment to her sport of choice is inspirational.
"This is a fantastic achievement and I have no doubt that Alice’s determination and ambition will inspire her peers at Grantown and beyond to recognise the importance of setting goals and enjoying healthy approaches to well-being in shaping their young lifestyles.”
There was also success for two other Grantown Grammar pupils: Izzy Cox (17) came 6th in the W18E and Anna Cox (15) came 12th in the W16A.
"It's a fantastic achievement for a British competition," said Mr Finlayson.
The championshps were hosted by the clubs of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association.
