Badenoch and Strathspey MP Danny Alexander has backed a local Oxfam and Save the Children campaign to raise awareness of the millions suffering in Syria.

Since the start of the Syrian conflict over 100,000 people have been killed, over 2,000,000 people are living as refugees in neighbouring countries and more than 4,000,000 people have been displaced inside Syria.

Oxfam is working with others to alleviate poverty and suffering and continues to work in Jordan, Al Zaatari camp, helping refugees with shelter, water and sanitation.

While visiting the Inverness Oxfam outlet on Friday, March 22, Mr Alexander said: "The conflict has forced millions of Syrians from their homes, we need to make sure we are doing everything we can to help.

"The UK is providing refuge to some of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees and providing £600m in humanitarian aid – second only to the United States.

"In government, I will continue to support the peace talks currently taking place in Geneva and all peace efforts - only a political resolution between the Assad regime and Syrian opposition will provide a lasting solution.

"In the meantime the UK will continue do everything we can to alleviate the suffering. We have a long and proud tradition of providing refuge at times of conflict and crisis. That is why I am very proud of this local campaign to raise awareness of the suffering in Syria."

Readers can continue to help Syrian refugees by making donations to the Love Syria campaign through the Oxfam Inverness shop, or through the Save the Children Inverness shop.
