A man was taken to hospital last night after his black VW Polo was involved in an accident with a G4S security van on the A9 in front of road works at Slochd Beag Bridge near Tomatin.

The black VW Polo involved was badly damaged and firemen had to use cutting gear to remove the roof of the vehicle to release the driver.

It is understood the man did not suffer life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the van, a Mercedes, were unhurt.

The collision happened in the southbound lane of the road in front of temporary traffic lights set up because of the roadworks which are due to finish today.

A motorist caught up in the aftermath said: “By 10.50pm there was a lengthy tailback of traffic which is unusual at this time of night because normally you’d be the only car in recent weeks sitting at the lights.

“I was held up more just behind a sign warning roadworks 600 yards and most of the traffic was HGVs which could not turn back and get onto the old A9 at the Slochd.”
