ABERNETHY GAMES: Bumper crowd turns out despite unpredictable weather
Tributes were paid to two great supporters of the Abernethy Highland Games as they popular gathering took place in a mixture of sunshine and some heavy showers.
The unpredictable weather did not put off the spectators who turned out in great numbers for the Friendly Games in Nethy Bridge – which can trace their roots all the way back to the 1830s – on Saturday.
As ever, there was a strong contingent from the Clan Grant for their home gathering.
And Sandy MacCook, chairman of the Abernethy Highland Games Association, paid tribute to Lord Strathspey, clan chieftain who passed away earlier this summer.
He said: "James, Lord Strathspey, has for many years led the members of his clan, and received clan visitors from throughout the world here on games day, and was himself a member of our organising committee and indeed games chieftain in 1997.
"We extend sincere condolences to all members of the clan but in particular to his wife Judy and brother Michael who leads the clan today."
Mr McCook also paid tribute to well-known Spar Shop owner, Andy Young, who served so many of those who arrived from all points to Nethy Bridge on games day.
He said: "While not directly involved in the games, Andy had been a great supporter of our event and many others within the village and indeed sponsored this morning's races for children supplying the badges so eagerly sought and also the sweets for the winners.
"Again our condolences and sympathies to the family."
There was a great turn-out for the track and field with the junior section continuing the recent trend of rising numbers and there was a good level of competition in the heavies.
