-18C recorded as mercury plummets overnight across the Highlands
Temperatures across the Highlands fell well below freezing again overnight - with the mercury bottoming out at -18C close to the A9 in the Cairngorms National Park.
Highland and Island Weather, which operates a large array of professional weather stations across the region, reported on its Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Highlandweather) that the -18C low was experienced between Slochd and Carrbridge overnight. It followed a low of -16C near Carrbridge that was recorded overnight Friday into Saturday.
The frigid temperatures came as the Met Office issued another yellow warning for snow and ice. The latest alert comes into force at 5pm on Sunday and is warning of up to 10cm of snow in the hills and several centimetres possible even to lower levels.
Residents in the Highlands were waking up to another winter wonderland of icy landscapes on Sunday morning, with even areas yet to experience snowfall waking to a white vista thanks to the thick frost.
Motorists on the A9 in Easter Ross were recording -8C on their cars shortly after 8am, and boulders exposed by the low tide in the Cromarty Firth could be seen caked in ice despite the salty water.
Inverness was also well below freezing, with the temperature sitting at around -6C at around the same time.
