Highland motorcyclists caught doing speeds of 142mph, 139mph and 117mph on the B817 near the A9 in Easter Ross, and three Porsche drivers were snared doing 99mph on the NC500 near Ledgowan in Wester Ross during a Police Scotland crackdown
Motorists were caught doing speeds of up to 142mph on Highland roads at the weekend, police have revealed.
Officers snared numerous drivers travelling well above the national speed limit during a weekend of ‘proactive patrols’ across the region.
The worst offenders were in Easter Ross, where separate motorcyclists were caught doing speeds of 142mph, 139mph and 117mph, and a car doing 90mph - all on the B817 near Ballachcraggan, which is close to Kildary and the A9 in Easter Ross.
And speeding motorists were not just confined to Easter Ross, with three Porsche drivers all snared doing 99mph on the NC500 in Wester Ross.
They were caught by police speed guns on the A890 near Ledgowan.
Police have now warned motorists that drivers caught at such seeds face “serious penalties” and have warned drivers to stick to the speed limits for the safety of them and others.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Driving or riding at these speeds drastically reduces reaction time. Excessive speed is one of the 5 most prevalent causation factors in serious and fatal collisions.
“All of these drivers now face serious penalties. We remain committed to improving road safety across the Highlands and Islands."
The motorists were caught during a series of ‘proactive patrols’ that the officers carried out over the weekend during the continued sunny and dry weather - which has encouraged more people into the outdoors.
The force said the patrols spent the weekend ‘engaging with a wide range of road users and working to detect and deter irresponsible and dangerous behaviour’.
They added that although the majority of people were using and sharing the roads responsibly, a small number ‘unfortunately chose to disregard the safety of themselves and others — and now face the consequences’.
