The Strathspey & Badenoch Welfare League is returning next week after a lay-off since the end of summer 2019 due to the Covid restrictions.

Six teams from across the region will be competing in the 2022 season which kicks off next Tuesday (May 10).

League president Alasdair McNeill said: "Welfare football is something of a long-standing tradition in the area so it’s quite staggering to think that not a single ball has been kicked in anger since 2019.

"But as much as we wanted to keep playing, we had to abide by SFA and Scottish Government Covid regulations.

"Now though that light at the end of the tunnel is finally here.

"My thanks go to FC Abernethy, Cromdale, Aviemore Thistle, Kingussie, Boat of Garten and Spey Valley Youths for all jumping on board so enthusiastically and making the job of getting competitive football back on the local map a much easier one.

"Like me, they’re just thrilled to see things returning to normal and can’t wait to get started.

"So far only the league fixtures have been scheduled as we’re still on the hunt for the various cups from 2019, but they’ll be factored into the season once located.

"The main thing is to get playing again.

"I would also like to give my sincere thanks to long time friends David Ritchie & Sons who have continued to keep faith in the league by agreeing to sponsor us again for the coming season.

"Their ongoing support is truly appreciated."

The first round of league fixtures is as follows: FC Abernethy v Cromdale; Spey Valley v Aviemore Thistle; Boat of Garten v Kingussie.

Kick off is 7pm.

Look out for all the action from the first fixtures in next week's Strathy
