Play had to be suspended at the 2021 Grantown-on-Spey Open Tennis Championship this evening after thunder and lightning storms arrived in the area.

The competition has enjoyed a good run of glorious sunshine and high temperatures since its start of Sunday for the early rounds.

With busy days of play still timetabled going into the weekend, organisers will have to juggle the schedule but there is scope of the programme for rain delays.

Tournament organiser Alan Russell said: "After a great morning, afternoon and early evening, the thunderstorm that had been forecast all day finally arrived and today's play had to be abandoned at 6.30pm.

"Tuesday's unplayed matches have been rescheduled for tomorrow or Thursday, except for three matches that will have to move to later in the week.

"All the matches previously scheduled for Wednesday have been left unchanged.

"The weather forecast for tonight and most of tomorrow is bad enough for us to expect severe disruption to tomorrow's schedule."
