Kingussie assumed a familiar position at the top of the Mowi Premiership but it was not all plain sailing against Skye Camanachd at The Dell on Saturday.

When the week’s wet weather left Skye’s pitch unplayable, the fixture was reversed with the second team meeting between the clubs moved to The Market Stance.

Kingussie’s Roddy Young saw a penalty saved before Iain Fraser and Dylan Borthwick gave the Kings a 2-0 interval lead.

There was drama at the break as Kingussie were forced to replace injured keeper Rory McGregor with the versatile Lee Bain.

Ruaraidh MacLeod got Skye back into it and the Islanders spurned a chance to level when Ross Gordon missed the target from the penalty spot.

Kingussie sealed victory on 71 minutes as Rory MacKeachan’s ball up-field started an attack and when the ball was played across to Thomas Borthwick at the back post, he finished well across the keeper.

Kings substitute Savio Genini had the ball in the net following a corner, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Kingussie manager Iain Borthwick said: “Skye had us on the back foot for around 20 minutes at the start of the second half when we were all over the place until we hit our third goal.”

“Thankfully Skye missed their penalty as I’m not sure what would have happened if they’d scored.”

Kingussie seconds top Mowi North Division 1 after Savio Genini’s double from the penalty spot, coupled with efforts from Rory Munro, Toby Thain and Jordan Reid earned a 5-4 win over the Skye seconds.

The Kingussie senior side are back at The Dell this Saturday when Lovat are the visitors in the league.

Borthwick observed: “I don’t know what team we’ll have out. It looks like Bob (Rory McGregor) is out, and Roddy Young is off for an x-ray on an injured foot.”

The Kingussie second team do not have a fixture.

Zoe Reid scored four times as Badenoch beat Kinlochshiel 6-0 in their Mowi Premier League match at The Dell on Sunday. Grace Fraser and Hope Borthwick got the others.
