Inverurie Locos 4-1 Strathspey Thistle

STRATHSPEY are looking forward to what should be a more fruitful run of fixtures after enduring a tough spell.

Thistle's last win was at the start of the New Year against Lossiemouth.

Since then they have lost to seventh-placed Nairn, Rothes in third, table-toppers Brora and most recently against an Inverurie side that sits second in the Highland League.

Next up for the Jags are fixtures against mid-table trio Deveronvale, Wick and Keith, as well as second-bottom Fort William.

These are teams the Grantown side must aspire to beat if they want to move up from 13th place in the standings.

Thistle boss Gordy Nicolson hopes Saturday's home fixture against Vale can be the launchpad for a positive run of results.

He said: "Over the last four games we have acquitted ourselves quite well. We were not far off it against Inverurie. They scored crucial goals at good times to see them through the game.

"Our next run is against teams in the bottom half of the table. If we are to finish where we want to in the league, we need to be picking up points.

"They are tough games but we will be doing all we can to get points from them."

Strathspey's attacking threat has been boosted by the signing of Kieran Chalmers. The teenage midfielder has penned an 18-month deal having left Inverness Caley Thistle.

Nicolson said: "I am very excited to get Kieran signed. He has a good pedigree and is a player with great technique.

"We have been monitoring him for a while as he has been on loan at a few Highland League clubs.

"He is a forward-thinking player so will hopefully give us a spark in the final third."

The Jags were up against it early on Saturday, against an Inverurie side that opened the scoring in just the seventh minute.

Neil Gauld showed neat control before dispatching the ball high into the net.

The visitors came more into the game and threatened though Cameron Lisle and James McShane, only for Locos to double their advantage late in the first half through a shot from the edge of the penalty area by Chris Angus.

Just after the break McShane directed a couple of efforts off target, before Angus set-up Ryan Stott for Inverurie's third goal of the game.

The Grantown outfit reduced the deficit through a fine finish from Scott Morrison, who added to his strike in the previous match against Brora.

However, Inverurie had the final say with Gauld converting a penalty after he had been fouled by Jags keeper Michael MacCallum.

Saturday, February 15 – Brora Rangers 3 Keith 1; Buckie Thistle 3 Lossiemouth 1; Deveronvale 1 Turriff United 0; Formartine United 5 Huntly 0; Inverurie Locos 4 Strathspey Thistle 1.
