Grantown tennis open championship reaches the midway point

The 2025 Grantown Tennis Open Championships are currently taking place on the clay courts at Grantown Tennis Club and remain on track despite the odd heavy bout of rain.

Players from all over the Highlands and further afield in Scotland have been competing at the six courts off the town’s Heathfield Road.

After three days some of the junior competitions have been completed and the latest winners and runners up are as follows:

• 8U singles winner: James Sey (Elgin); runner-up: Isabella Ross (Kingussie).

• 9U boys singles winner: Johan Mackenzie (Bellfield, Inverness); runner up - Rhys Forwood (Forres).

• 9U girls singles winner: Eliza Wilkie (Elgin); runners-up - Sienna Cameron (Rothes) and Isabella Ross (Kingussie).

• 10U boys singles winner: Aonghas Archibald (Elgin); runner-up: Shay Hutton (Aberdeen).

The adults' competitions are taking place in the evenings with play starting at around 5pm and then a further sets of matches scheduled from around 6.15pm and then 7.30pm.

The competitions will culminate with finals at the weekend and spectators are very welcome. The showcase finals are being held on Sunday.

Tournament referee Jane Bradley said: “There has been a very high standard of play. Our youngsters seem to improve every year - the bar gets raised higher and higher.

“There has been some great sportsmanship evident with honest line calls showing respect for opponent's good shots.”

Fixtures just getting under way now include first seed Gavin Price in the round of 16 men’s singles 45+ against Matthew Hamlett (Grantown); two talents Zee Abdelwahd against Henry Archibald in the men’s singles quarter-finals and third seed Aviemore’s Eve Wilkinson against Sarah Henbrey in the women’s singles 40+.

Men’s singles number one seed Stephen Anniss is in action later this evening against Price in the quarter final as is second seed Logan Urquhart in the same competition.
