Glenmore Lodge's public phone not under threat

By Gavin Musgrove

Glenmore Lodge has stressed that its payphone is not at risk of being cut off.

It is the public phone by Glenmore Youth Hostel which is under-threat during the latest round of closures by BT.

The sportscotland national outdoor centre contacted the Strathy following last week’s article after the BT list of phones up for consultation incorrectly described the location as Glenmore Lodge.

A Glenmore Lodge spokeswoman said: “We do have a payphone inside the lodge but it is one that we have installed and it is not under threat of being removed. It is staying.”

Highland Council is overseeing the public phone closure consultation.

A spokeswoman said: “BT has now provided Eastings and Northings points which are more helpful than their location descriptors. The call box is located by the Glenmore Youth Hostel.”

A total of 75 calls were made from the Glenmore phone box last year. Objectors have claimed its removal could put lives in danger especially in to report accidents in the Cairngorms gateway.

The deadline for responses is October 24. Comments can be sent to policy6@highland.gov.uk .
