Badenoch United sole local survivors in Highland Welfare Cup

Badenoch United are now the only local side remaining in the Highland Welfare Cup with the other SBWFA welfare sides bowing-out the competition at the weekend.

Badenoch Utd 1-1 New Pitsligo (4-1 on penalties)

A very closely contested first half burst into life on the 36th minute when Jamie Ramsay put the visitors from the North East into the lead.

It remained this way until 16 minutes from time when Oliver Walker netted a sensational equaliser.

With no further scoring at the end of 90 minutes, and no extra time in the Highland Cup, the game went into a nerve-racking penalty shoot-out.

And it was the hosts who prevailed with Scott Macdonald, Charlie Taylor, Oliver Walker and Finlay McBain all finding the target.

Only Ross Michie scored from the spot for New Pitsligo, with keeper Callum Liggertwood saving one and the rest being missed.

New Deer A-A Grantown Rovers

Cromdale had previously withdrawn from the competition, so on Saturday Grantown Rovers travelled to New Deer.

They faced a daunting task having only been able to muster 10 men against a very capable opposition.

But they were down to nine men within just five minutes of the kick-off through a nasty head wound.

And by half time the visitors had picked up another two injuries to players who could not be replaced, and so they took the wise decision to concede the game.

FC Abernethy 2-3 Macduff

FC Abernethy hosted North East side Macduff the same afternoon.

Despite the appalling weather, things started brightly for them when Jack Ward put them a goal up after only eight

minutes.

But this was cancelled out shortly after by Macduff’s Owen Christie.

Grant Gordon added a second for the visitors later in the half before Christie pounced again to make it 3-1.

Nethy were thrown a lifeline deep into first half injury time when Michael Stephne found his own net but there was to be no further scoring.
