Laggan runner Katie Slimon has been selected to compete for Scotland in the Under-18 youth international hill race in Ambleside.

The event is scheduled for July 24.

Slimon’s confirmation came in the selection race staged in Luss at the end of June, where a team of four girls and four boys were selected.

She turns 16 on Saturday.

Currently being coached by Norrie Hay at Glasgow school of sport, the young star told the Strathy: “ I am delighted to be selected to run for my country in Ambleside,

“The selection has come some hard training – I’ve been doing hill sessions on South Drumochter,

“Ambleside is going to see a fast race, but the experience will be great.”

The home event is good news after the disappointment of the Covid complications which hit the International U18 Mountain Running Cup which was scheduled for the same venue and due for hosting by Ambleside AC

“This summer we hoped to welcome runners from around the world to come and race,” the club posted, “but after much consideration we have decided , sadly, to cancel this, our third attempt at the event.

“However, with UK doing well in terms of vaccinations etc, we still intend to have a Home Countries Youth International, so the young athletes have something to go at, on the weekend of July 23/24.”

Next year the Youth Cup is scheduled to be staged in Italy, with plans already being made for the following year’s championships, pencilled in for France.
