Aviemore Thistle claim the welfare title but job not done yet
Aviemore Thistle boss Finlay McDonald has said the job is not done yet after his side defended their Strathspey and Badenoch Welfare League crown.
The Jags beat Badenoch United 7-1 on Tuesday evening in Aviemore to claim the title - the first under McDonald after Jordan Wardrope had ended the league drought last season.
McDonald is now targeting a perfect 10 out of 10 in the league. He said: “It was a good result. The boys played well and got the job done.
“That is nine wins in a row this season so hopefully next week we can make it 10.
“To win all of our games in the league would be great.”
McDonald said that it was low-key after the final whistle - it was a Tuesday night after-all.
He commented: “We never went out but we are planning on doing something at the end of the season to celebrate our league success.”
The Jags are away at Abernethy next Tuesday (July 30) in the round 10 of the fixtures and where they are expected to be presented with the local welfare shield.
Aviemore had to come from behind to win and claim the title and gloss was added to the result thanks to a David Robertson second half hat-trick.
Wayne Cathcart got his side back into the game with the first two for the Jags and then there was an own goal so that the Jags led 3-1 at the break.
Craig MacLeod made it 4-1 before Robertson’s hat-trick.
Grantown Utd 7-2 FC Abernethy
Abernethy started full of confidence after their recent unbeaten run and created some good early chances.
Martin Guckian, Lee Davies and Ben Buckler were denied the opening goal by some great saves.
The Nethy Bridge side did take the lead, however, when Ben Buckler met a corner from Chris Tilbury to flash a brilliant header into the net.
Grantown replied and then took the lead. Nethy’s Jules Orsi, in a hot vein of form, latched on to a Ben Buckler through ball to slide an assured finish past the goalkeeper for his side’s second goal.
The second half started disastrously for Aberenthy with Grantown scoring two quickfire goals - one a penalty after Rob Stewart was adjudged to have fouled Fraser Greenlees.
Nethy kept pushing and were unlucky not to grab a third goal when Tilburys long range effort clipped the corner of post and bar and rebounded to safety.
But there was to be no way back for Aberenthy.
