The Vikings return
The Vikings return

After three decades, the Vikings have returned to Loch Insh.

Never mind the blizzard, the freezing temperatures, the blood-chilling waters, the Viking blood was up as Saturday March 16 2019 entered the history books, with Loch Insh Sailing School giving everyone the chance to set sail once more blowing their horns and wielding their mighty axes.

"It's been a fantastic day," celebrated Jonny Freshwater after overseeing a triumphant afternoon of races out into the loch both under sail and the brute force of rowlocking oarsfolk.

"The idea came about as one of the events which will mark the sailing school's 50th anniversary. We wondered if the weather might affect the entries for today's big do, but we needn't have worried.

"We had more than 30 Vikings splitting into eight different boats and they found the conditions simply lent the perfect atmosphere."

In the 1970s and '80s there were annual fancy dress race days at the loch by Kincraig and now there is a very real prospect they could become annual events again.
