Scottish Water has said water supplies should be returning to normal in Aviemore after being disrupted earlier this evening.

Residents in many parts of the village reported either having no water or water pressure running very low.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: "Following reports of customers without water in Aviemore, our local team attended this evening to investigate and identified that a valve had been operated in error by a local business which was seeking to isolate its own supply to deal with a burst within its premises.

"This has been remedied and normal water supply to customers who were affected should return quickly.

“We would like to apologise to customers in the village who experienced disruption as a result of this issue.

"Our local team has been working hard over recent days to respond to challenges experienced by our water network and by customers within their own properties over the extended period of cold weather, in an effort to minimise impact on service as far as possible.”

There had been some reports from residents than they were unable to get through or had to wait for a long time to report the problem with their water supply in Aviemore.

Some homes in Carrbridge are also understood to have been without water throughout most of today.

A resident told the Strathy: "The problem reported in morning but not listed in Scottish Water website any water problems. We reported this again in the evening after 25 minutes to 30 minutes waiting on phone.

"It could possibly be a day without water or more."

It is understood that Scottish Water's contact centre has fielded more than over 6000 contacts and queries today compared to a typical daily average of around 350 calls.

There have been several larger incidents in the Central Belt but also a high number of localised issues across the country.
