The Met Office has issued a weather warning for snow arriving in the Highlands.

The yellow level warning kicks in at 11am tomorrow and runs through to midnight as things stand.

For the Highlands, it states: "Heavy snow is expected across northern parts of Great Britain bringing likely travel disruption, especially over higher routes."

It could mean that the region is subject to:

• possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers

• Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel

• There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off

• There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services such as mobile phone coverage may be affected.

But power chiefs said that they have changed their footing following the restoration of power to all customers’ faults reported to during Storm Arwen.

A spokesperson for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks said: "We have moved our operational status in the north of Scotland down from Red Alert to Yellow Alert and will remain on this status until we return the network to full operational health.

"We are now actively tracking a weather front, named Storm Barra by the Irish Met Office, that is due to move through the country tomorrow (Tuesday).

"Although forecasts at this stage suggest that Storm Barra is unlikely to match the intensity of Storm Arwen, we are actively monitoring this on a regular basis and are ready to move the necessary resources and equipment to the locations we believe will see the worst of the weather.

"In addition, we continue to have an enhanced workforce in the North East of Scotland ready to act should network faults occur."

A yellow warning is the least severe of three bandings which also include amber and, most severe, red.
