ScotRail has confirmed the line has reopened.

The Highland Main Line has fully reopened south of Inverness following a safety inspection - but disruption is expected to continue for a time as trains move back into position.

Network Rail engineers were called to a section of the line near Culloden at lunchtime on Thursday after reports of a possible track defect.

The northbound line was closed as a precaution for a time, with some trains held at stations further down the line until the ‘all clear’ was given.

In an update, a ScotRail spokesperson said: “Following a safety inspection on a train earlier today between Dalwhinnie and Inverness the line has now reopened.

“Disruption is expected until 2.30pm. Disruption to services may still be ongoing until our staff and trains are back in position.”
