HIGHLANDERS are gearing up for yet more snowfalls this week – with no fewer than three separate yellow warnings in place for parts of the region in the coming days… and more on the way.

A Met Office yellow warning for snow and ice is currently in force for all of Caithness and Sutherland, as well as parts of Ross-shire, the Black Isle, Inverness, and Nairnshire. It will remain in place until midday on Monday, and has already resulted in snow showers for some - including central Inverness during rush hour.

A separate yellow warning for snow and ice, covering parts of Badenoch and Strathspey - and extending south - will come into effect at 10pm on Monday and remain in place for all of Tuesday.

And a third alert, for snow, centred on the Cairngorms and a wider area of Badenoch & Strathspey, will be in force for all of Wednesday.

Commenting on Monday morning’s alert, and Met Office forecaster said: “Overnight into Monday showers will start to feed in from the north, falling as sleet and snow. These are likely to leave surfaces wet with some icy stretches as well as snow accumulations of 2-3 cm in places.”

Commenting on the subsequent warnings for Badenoch & Strathspey, they added that up to 20 centimetres of snow could fall on higher routes on Tuesday, and that “significant accumulations” are possible during Wednesday.

The warnings follow recent frigid temperatures, with the mercury plummeting to -13C in some places in the Highlands on Saturday night, and further icy conditions overnight into Monday.

The figures were revealed by Lee Schofield at Highland Weather (@highlandweather on Twitter, and Highlands and Islands Weather on Facebook), who also warned that some projections were expecting temperatures to fall below -10C widely across the Highlands this weekend.
