A NEWTONMORE couple still had a night to remember despite their self-catering business missing out on a national accolade.

Rod and Dianne Frazer met with Outlander author Diana Gabaldon (centre) at The Scottish Thistle Awards at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on Thursday evening.

Where Stags Roar was flying the flag as the Highlands and Islands Tourism Regional award-winners for best self-catering accommodation experience in November, last year.

Dianne said: “It was a highlight for us to be able to personally congratulate Diana Gabaldon on such a well-deserved award for International Contribution to Scottish Tourism, and have a wee chat.

“A couple of years ago we met some Belgians in a restaurant in Newtonmore, got the craic and they ended up coming back for a dram.

“They couldn’t quite believe they were drinking whisky with a Frazer– albeit not a Jamie – with his sassenach wife, surrounded by shinty sticks and shinty memorabilia.

Rod had to show his passport to them to prove it, as they were big Outlander fans and thought he was pulling their leg!”

Dianne added: “Although we didn’t bring any silverware home to Badenoch ourselves this time, we were very chuffed to be national finalists and represent the region in our category. Congratulations to all of the winners – especially the Highlanders.”

Macgregors Bar in Inverness was crowned best pub and Cruise Loch Ness received best visitor attraction.
