Our secondary school students and their teachers have been among those to face the biggest challenges over the past 18 months.

Highland Heroes 2022 wants to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our secondary school pupils and their teachers with two awards.

The secondary school pupil Heroes award will go to a student who has achieved something beyond expectations in education, sport or helping others at school.

The award for secondary school teacher of the year will be given to a teacher who has made a significant difference, beyond the normal expectations, to the learning experience of their pupils.

The secondary school pupil of the year award is sponsored by Developing the Young Workforce Inverness and Central Highland (DYWICH).

Sandra McCaughey, DYWICH interim programme manager, said: “DYWICH is delighted to sponsor the secondary school pupil of the year category at the Highland Heroes awards in 2022.

“The past 18 months have been a challenging time for us all and particularly for young people, so as we move into 2022 it’s good to take some time to recognise the young people in our community who have achieved something beyond expectations in education, sport or helping others at school. DYWICH has a dedicated coordinator in every secondary school in the Inverness and Central Highland area enabling us to better prepare young people for the world of work. Hosted by Inverness Chamber of Commerce, DYWICH are connecting employers with education and working with partners to enable young people to gain the skills, knowledge and experience required to make career choices and access the world of work.”

Craig Cunningham, SSE Renewables project manager for Bhlaraidh Wind Farm Extension, said: “SSE Renewables is an integral part of communities across the Highlands and these awards are a wonderful way of recognising the people and organisations who make a difference in the places where we live and work. We are delighted to give them our full support.

“We are particularly pleased to be associated with the secondary teacher award. The challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic have had a profound impact on young people in our communities. The skill and dedication of the people who have continued to educate and support students across the Highlands throughout these difficult circumstances deserves special recognition.

“Whilst this award shines the spotlight on one hero in our community, we are sure there are many more examples of people in our education system who have shown exceptional character over the last year.

“We would encourage readers to get in touch to share their stories of their heroes and how they have made a difference to students’ lives.”
