A sponsored walk is to be held in Aviemore later this month to save more dachshunds from China’s dog meat trade.

Highlander Julie Anne Grant is one of the original founders of the Dog Meat Trade Dachshund Support Group.

She tells the Strathy: “We are a group of over 4000 individuals dedicated to the rescue of dachshunds rescued from the dog meat trade and breeding farms in Korea and China – and we’re staging an event in Aviemore this month.”

The group has been running for just over a year and has managed to save 20 dachshunds to date. Already eight of them are in their forever homes in the UK.

Julie said: “Covid has proved very challenging for us as a group as we have had to fly the dachshunds over via cargo at approximately £3500 per dog. I am immensely proud to be part of this community. We are supported by numerous small businesses and our members regularly undertake fundraising activities.

“As we move away from lockdown, we have arranged a sponsored walk on the June 13 in Aviemore to raise further funds for transport costs. The sponsored walk will start at 11am at the Cairngorm Mountain car park and will end at the old Bridge Inn in Aviemore. Approximately 25 dachshunds will be taking part and many will be wearing our T-shirts.”

All proceeds will go towards the transport costs of dachshunds due to fly out at the end of August. Some £17,500 is needed to bring them to the UK.
