Noble yew tree felled in Badenoch churchyard to avoid any disasters

A beautiful old yew tree in a Badenoch churchyard had been struck once too often by winter storms in its long life and was finally declared unsafe.

This week the Highland Council’s arboreal team - would you believe, including Martin Kingstree - were sent out to Kingussie Parish Church’s cemetery to carry out an expert felling and church members watched with a mixture of sadness and wonder at the sensitive way the job was done.

“It was a lovely tree but it was diseased and was certainly showing signs of wear and tear,” said one of the observers.

“We watched as the team dismantled it branch by branch. Such patience and skill.”

Mr Kingstree and colleague Martin Mackenzie soon made sure that the cemetery would not see any unscheduled additions to its inhabitants.

A council spokesperson told the Strathy: “Yes the work was carried out by our in-house arb team.

“The tree which was removed had suffered storm damage previously.

“The woodchip will be used as a mulch on shrub beds once it has been given time to season.”
