After the success of last year's 24-hour show, the Shuffle Sessions' Cath Wright is taking on a new marathon challenge this weekend.

She told the Strathy: "We're going to run a non-stop, 30-hour challenge of music, madness and showcasing the bestest ever presenting skills!"

The long haul!
The long haul!

The big show starts at 5am on Saturday 24 and will finish at 10am on Sunday.

And it's a special effort from a very special radio station, aimed at securing its hallowed place on the local airwaves from its base in the heart of Aviemore.

"We are staffed entirely by volunteers and are a non-profit company," Cath explained. "Fundraising is vital to keeping us on air when so many other community radio stations are closing down.

"Along with the challenges that 2020 has brought for many of us on a personal level, as a result of Covid-19, all of our essential fundraising events and outside broadcasts were cancelled and this sponsored show is now more crucial than ever to bring in vital funds.

"Throughout this year we have continued to broadcast 24 hours a day and the costs still mount up and will still be there in 2021."

The station started life in 1993 as Ski FM, before sharing air time with MFR in Inverness for a time.

But in 2009 the local pioneeres were granted their own Community Radio Licence by OFCOM, and began broadcasting on 107.1 FM as well as live on the internet.

The most recent development was the advent of 24-hour broadcasting in 2014.

"It's going to be a tought challenge," Cath acknowledges.

"The 30 hours of continuous presenting will allow for the clocks changing and the rules lay down just five minutes' break per hour – and no more than two songs in succession - to make sure I'm awake!!"
