Walkers are being informed of a permanent change to the route of a popular orbital footpath in Newtonmore after a landslip earlier this year.

The short Allt Laraidh section of the Wildcat Trail was badly damaged at the end of February during the big thaw.

There had been hopes that the path could be repaired but the trust which looks after the walk said that this had now been ruled out on cost grounds.

Newtonmore Community Woodland and Development Trust (NCWDT) secretary Paul Allan said: “Following discussions with the landowner and a professional consultant the NCWDT has reluctantly decided to permanently close the Allt Laraidh section of the Wildcat Trail as there is no financially viable way of carrying out effective repairs.

“The Wildcat Trail now follows a different route via Strone Road.”

The trust said at the time of the landslip that it was now too dangerous for walkers to use.

Information is posted on the detour by the Allt Laraidh section and also at the Wildcat Centre in Newtonmore.

It reopened on Friday for visitors wanting to follow the trail. The doors will also be open again on Bank Holiday Monday 10.30am to 3pm.
