Strictly Inverness same-sex dance partnership steps up for Highland Hospice’s fundraiser.
In this week’s episode of the Strictly for a Cause podcast, contestants Shirlee and Laura talk about their journey as one of this year’s same-sex dance partnerships in Highland Hospice’s Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser
Shirlee and Laura, who have been paired together as a same-sex dance duo, are six weeks into rehearsals for their May16th performance as part of Team Friday.
The partnership, while unusual for the competition, was simply down to numbers.
"There’s no big statement—it just worked out this way," Shirlee said. "At the end of the day, it’s all about raising money for the hospice."

Training and Fundraising Underway
Both dancers admit they are well outside their comfort zones, with neither having formal dance experience.
"I think I can just about manage the Macarena after a few vodkas," Shirlee joked.
Rehearsals have included overcoming nerves, learning choreography, and adjusting to dancing together.
"It took a while to figure out where we’re supposed to stand and where to put our hands," Laura added. "But I think any partnership would have that challenge at the start."
Alongside training, the pair is busy fundraising with events including a Ladies’ Day, a spring fair, and a charity quiz night.
"People have been incredibly generous," Laura said. "Businesses and individuals have donated raffle prizes and time—it’s been overwhelming."
Highland Hospice provides end-of-life care across the region, supporting individuals and families during some of their most difficult times.
Shirlee, who works for the charity, has seen the impact first hand.
"It’s a sad place at times, but it’s also filled with so much love," she said.
Laura’s motivation is also personal.
"A few people I’ve known have needed the hospice, and that’s what’s driving me to do this," she said.
With 11 weeks to go, training is ramping up, and both fundraisers are feeling the pressure.
"We started out struggling with basic moves—now we’re learning lifts," Laura said. "It’s a challenge, but it’s worth it."
Their partnership, while not the norm for the event, has become one of the more talked-about duos this year.
"We just get on well," Shirley said. "It’s about trust, teamwork, and getting through it together."
The Strictly for a Cause podcast is released every Saturday, following the contestants’ progress in the lead-up to the event.
Highland Hospice’s Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser takes place on May 16th.
