Highlands suffered housebreaking crimes at Christmas over past 5 years
Leaving a light on at home is among the advice from police in order to keep your property safe over the festive period.
Officers issued a range of tips after a Freedom of Information request revealed the number of recorded housebreaking crimes in the Highland Council area on December 24-27 in the past five years.

There have been three such incidents on Christmas Day in the region - with two of these happening last year and the other in 2019.
There was a reported housebreaking on Christmas Eve in 2021 and one on December 27 that year.
There were one each on Boxing Day in 2019 and 2022.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The busy Christmas period can provide an increased opportunity for criminals.
“Officers are busy working throughout our local communities to ensure everyone can enjoy a peaceful festive period.
“We would remind people to please be mindful of your home and vehicle security, especially during the later afternoon and evenings. To opportunistic thieves a dark home is an empty home so always leave a light on if it will be dark before you return.
“It’s crucial to keep valuables safe and out of sight. Stay vigilant and take small steps to enhance security and protect your property. Make sure your home, any garage, outbuildings and vehicles are kept secure with windows and doors locked.
“Get to know your neighbours and watch out for each other. A close-knit community can be an effective deterrent against crime. Trust your instincts. If you see something suspicious, please report it to police.”
