Police who stopped a motorist in Aviemore in the early hours discovered a 73-year-old woman who was smelling of alcohol.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that retired lecturer Elinor Sayer, of Riverside Court, Nairn was driving on the B9152 at 2.50am on July 20 this year.

The roadside test proved positive and a subsequent breath sample showed she had 58mcgs of alcohol in her system, when the legal limit is 22mcgs.

She admitted the offence and was fined £520. Sayer was also banned from driving for a year.

Her solicitor Duncan Henderson told Sheriff Ian Cruickshank: "She is very ashamed to be here."

He asked the court to certify his client as suitable for the drink-driver rehabilitation course.

Sheriff Cruickshank agreed and told Sayer she would earn a three-month discount on her disqualification if she successfully completes it.
