Next Tuesday (January 27) marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the largest mass murder in history.

Seventy candles will be lit across the UK to mark the occasion and this year’s theme is “Keep the memory alive”.

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey MP Danny Alexander and the Liberal Democrats have pledged that they will carry on funding the education of young people about the Holocaust.

Mr Alexander said: "This day holds even greater significance for me following my visit to Auschwitz in 2007, where I accompanied pupils from five Highland schools to the former concentration camp.

"I will never forget the atrocities committed against thousands of families at Auschwitz.

“On Holocaust Memorial Day we pause to remember the millions who were murdered in the Holocaust and challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today.

“When all 70 candles are lit throughout the country, it will be a poignant moment of remembrance and a time for us all to ensure we keep the memory alive.”
