Badenoch MSP Kate Forbes has welcomed comments from the Scottish Government’s transport secretary reaffirming his support for the dualling of the A9 from Perth to Inverness.

Michael Matheson MSP recently said that the trunk road dualling programme was “critical to supporting the Highlands economy”.

The transport secretary added that having “good road infrastructure”, like the A9 dualling, would still be necessary in a zero carbon economy.

In a joint letter earlier this month, business, transport and council leaders stated that calls to scrap the A9 dualling programme are “extremely short-sighted at best and would be a barrier to strong progress on renewable energy and forestry growth”.

Today (January 27) Ms Forbes said: “Dualling the A9 has been a long time coming and should have been done decades ago.

"The SNP has done more to improve Highland infrastructure in the last 10 years than previous administrations did in decades.

“Dualling the A9 is first and foremost about road safety and surely that is an issue on which we can all agree.

"I am delighted that the Scottish Government isn’t going to abandon its important commitment to dualling the A9.

“If we want to see Scotland leading the way on electric cars, then they’ll need a road on which to drive.”
