An RAF Poseidon has dropped a torpedo in the Moray Firth for the first time.

The nine feet weapon was released as part of a training exercise which simulated an attack on an enemy submarine.

Squadron Leader Dave Higgins said: "This exercise has proved everything is in place for our weapon technicians to rapidly get these torpedoes onto our aircraft, so we can deliver them wherever and whenever they are needed.”

The Mk 54 torpedo is small and light enough to enable five to be carried by a Poseidon at a time.

A special training variant of the Mk54 was used in the exercise which was carried out by 120 Squadron.

Its design allowed it to be recovered later.

Five Poseidons are now based at RAF Lossiemouth with a further four set to be delivered by the end of this year.
