The head of education at Highland Council has written to parents as the school year is set to formally end.

In her letter Nicky Grant, the council's head of education, said: "As we come towards the end of the academic session, we want to recognise the wonderful achievements and commitment to learning of the Highland Council children and young people during this period.

"As we emerge from this difficult time we are looking forward to welcoming all children and young people back to our schools and ELC (early learning and childcare) settings ensuring they continue to receive the highest quality of care and learning.

"We are fully aware this has been a tough and uncertain time for families throughout the Highland Council area and we thank you again, as parents and carers, for your incredible support, understanding and resilience."

Highland Council is aiming to welcome children back to school and nursery on Wednesday, August 12 after an in-service day for staff the previous day.

Ms Grant also acknowledged that the situation around coronavirus and education remains fast moving and challenging and said the council, along with schools, recognises the importance of keeping residents informed and updated.
