Motorists are being warned that a section of the A86 between Cluny and Balgowan will be closed for nine nights in total from later this week.

The £305,000 project will see over three kilometres of the Newtonmore-Fort William route resurfaced from Thursday night.

Road bosses have said the work will create a safer and smoother journey for road users.

The improvements will take place between 7pm and 6am each night with all works due to be completed by 6am Wednesday 3 April.

No works are programmed for Friday or Saturday nights.

A spokesperson for contractors Bear Scotland said: "To ensure the safety of road workers and motorists, an overnight road closure will be required during the improvements due to the narrow width of the road.

"A signed diversion route will be in place via the A9 and A889 during the overnight working hours.

"All traffic management will be removed outwith working hours however a 30mph temporary speed limit will remain in place as vehicles will be travelling over a temporary surface.

"Emergency services will be able to pass through the works at all times and local access for residents living within the closure will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

"Consultation has been carried out with all relevant stakeholders to inform them of the works in advance."

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said, they have tried to keep disruption to a minimum.

He commented: “This £305,000 surfacing project will greatly improve the road surface on this section of the A86, creating a safer and smoother journey for motorists.

“We’ve taken on board feedback from the community and have taken steps to minimise disruption including scheduling the project to take place overnight and avoiding working on Friday and Saturday nights.

"Our teams will do all they can to limit the impact to motorists and complete the project as quickly and safely as possible.

“We thank motorists in advance for their patience whilst we carry out these surfacing improvements, and would encourage road users to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information and allow extra time for travel.”
