MORE than 5000 Covid cases have now been detected across the NHS Highland health board area since the pandemic began – after the region passed the grim milestone over Easter.

But in promising signs of slowing infection rates, it took more than two months (Feb 3 to Apr 4) to add the 1000 newest cases to that total – compared to just over three weeks (Jan 10 to Feb 3) for the tally to rise from 3000 to 4000, and under a fortnight for it to jump from 2000 to 3000.

The overall number of confirmed cases across the health board now stands at 5022, after 47 cases were detected over the long Easter weekend.

There had been no daily updates for health board figures over Easter, with the last tally before the break coming on Thursday, when the region had a cumulative total of 4975 cases.

Daily figures for the Easter weekend were released during today’s update – with eight confirmed infections detected in the 24 hours up to Friday, 13 on Saturday, 10 on Sunday, and nine on Monday, before another seven were recorded in the period leading up to Tuesday’s resumption of daily figures.

Only five people were receiving hospital treatment for the virus in NHS Highland last night. This was down two from the figure recorded before Easter.

Across Scotland there were 259 positive tests for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours – or two per cent of all tests conducted over that period.

Some 196 people were receiving treatment for the virus in Scotland’s hospitals last night. This was down 19 from last Thursday – the last day before the brief Easter gap in full updates.

The number of those in intensive care was unchanged at 21.

No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours, although most registry sites are closed on bank holidays.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, no new cases of the coronavirus were detected over the Easter period in either NHS Shetland, NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar.

NHS Grampian recorded 88 infections since the previous daily update last Thursday, with nine of those coming in the past 24 hours. It has now registered 14,497 cumulative cases since the pandemic began.

And there were 121 fresh infections over NHS Tayside in the days since the last daily update on April 1 – with 16 of those coming in the past day. It’s running tally now stands at 14,358.

There have now been 220,493 cumulative confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Scotland since the pandemic began.

Another 12,536 Scottish adults received their first vaccination jag on Easter Monday – taking the tally to 2,577,816.

And 7406 had their second injection, for a total of 463,780.
