Inventive mountain rescue team members turned their all terrain vehicle into an ambulance to ferry an injured walker to safety.

The woman trekker suffered a suspected broken leg while out walking her dog on the Speyside Way north of Aviemore.

Members of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team have adapted the flatbed section of their ATV to accommodate a stretcher and Friday’s rescue was the first time it was used for that purpose.

Iain Cornfoot, the new leader of Cairngorm MRT said: “The woman had telephoned her family and she was pretty cold. She must have been there for a couple of hours. Fortunately her family and a passing doctor had gone to her aid."

“We have had to adapt how we carry out rescues in the Covid-19 pandemic – minimising the use of personnel – and adapting the ATV to take a stretcher is a good way of doing that.”

The injured hiker was taken to Aviemore into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service. Her condition is unknown.
