MORE than 100 cases of Covid-19 were detected across the NHS Highland health board area in the past 24 hours.

The region registered 103 fresh positive tests, taking its cumulative total to 5979.

Some 188 people were receiving treatment for Covid-19 in Scottish hospitals last night – a rise of 11 from Thursday. Of those, 16 were in intensive care, which was down one.

There were 1747 newly-confirmed cases of the virus across Scotland in the past day, representing 6.9 per cent of all tests conducted in the country during that window.

However, Public Health Scotland warned that a “potential delay” in laboratory processing means the Scotland-wide figure of 1747 is likely “lower than might otherwise [have] been expected by an estimated 800-1100 cases, based on historical reporting patterns”.

Sadly two further people have died after testing positive for the virus in the previous 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no fresh infections overnight in either NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar, but the running total for NHS Shetland rose by two, to 256.

NHS Grampian’s overall total rose by 130, to 16,983.

And there were 212 newly-confirmed cases in NHS Tayside, for a running tally of 18,621.

There have now been 265,457 known cases of the virus in Scotland since the pandemic began.

Almost 3.71 million people have now received their first vaccination shot, while close to 2.65 million have had their second jag.
